Frequently Asked Questions
Bulk Goods FAQs
How much does a cubic yard cover?
A cubic yard covers a 10’ by 10’ area at 3” deep, a total of 27 cubic feet (3’ x 3’ x 3’). We have a calculator on the Stone Yard page if you would like to enter in your dimensions to see how much you should order.
How much is your mulch?
Any mulch is $45 per yard
Do you deliver mulch and stone?
Yes!
Do you have mulch that isn’t dyed?
Yes, our Brown Mulch is dye-free.
Can I get ¼ of a yard?
Unfortunately, we have no way of measuring ¼, only half yard and full yard measurements. However, you can fill up a 5 gallon bucket with any kind of bulk material for just $5!
How much will fit in my pickup truck?
Loam, sand, compost, and stone are heavy so we usually start with just a half yard in any pickup truck. Most 6 ft. beds will hold 1 ½ yards of mulch, and most 8 ft. beds will hold 2 yards of mulch.
Can I pay for a large amount and come back to pick up the rest throughout the day?
No, to avoid confusion we can only allow you to pay for what you can take. We can also deliver!
Delivery FAQs
What is your minimum for delivery?
We do not have a minimum, there is a delivery charge regardless of the quantity. Multiple materials will cost an additional delivery fee unless both of them are 3 yards or less.
What if I order more than what your delivery truck can hold?
You will only be charged one delivery fee if it is the same material; even if we have to take multiple trips. However, multiple materials will cost an additional delivery fee unless both of them are 3 yards or less.
What time will you be delivering?
Unfortunately, we do not have a system that allows us to estimate a time. You do not have to be home for the delivery. If you put a marker out for the driveway or leave detailed instructions on your order, you can be confident we will put it in the specified spot. All deliveries will be completed by 6pm.

For Sterling, West Boylston, and Holden the cost is $35. For Leominster, Lancaster, Clinton, Boylston, Shrewsbury, Worcester, Paxton, Rutland, and Princeton the cost is $45. How much can your delivery truck hold?
Our largest truck can hold 15 yards of mulch, or 6 yards of heavy material like stone or loam, in one trip.
Can I order mulch and loam in the same delivery?
Only if both materials are each 3 yards or less. Otherwise, it will be separate deliveries and delivery fees.
I have a spot in my backyard where I’d like the material dumped.
Due to company policy, our trucks are required to keep the tires of the truck on the driveway at all times. Even if you may have had large trucks on your yard in the past, we still strictly adhere to our policy.
Do I need to be home for the delivery?
You do not have to be home. Our drivers will drop the material where you specify in the notes of your order and they will leave you a copy of your receipt at your door. If you are not comfortable with that, feel free to leave a marker out so the driver knows exactly where you want it. We do not have a system that allows us to estimate a time and all deliveries will be completed by 6pm.

Can the driver give me a call before they arrive?
No. We don’t allow the drivers to come back up to the office to make phone calls between deliveries so that they are able to stay on track and get all the deliveries completed.
Install FAQs
How much does it cost to have this tree planted?
We charge 100% of the plant cost. For example, if you buy a $100 tree, it would be an additional $100 to install it. Your total would be $200 plus tax; the plant is taxed but the labor is not.
I just installed some plants. How often should I water them?
Most plants require water every day for 2 weeks after installation. After that, 2 to 3 times a week should be fine. Make sure to water on very hot or dry days.
I just installed some plants. When will I need fertilizer?
You will not need fertilizer for the first year after planting. It’s best for the plants if you wait until next year and then fertilize in the spring. You can use Biotone when planting to promote root growth.
Mobile Design Service FAQs
Can you tell me how your $99 mobile design service works?
Sure! Check out our full page here. This is our plant layout service. You send us a picture of the area you need designed and our designer will come out to your house with a whole truckload of plants. The designer will place all of the plants where they should go so you can step back and see the whole design to help you visualize the end result. If you like the design you can purchase the plants right there. It’s all spaced out so the plants won’t grow into each other or grow too close to the house. Our designer will also explain how things grow and when they will bloom. You can then plant the plants yourself, or our planting crew can come back to plant them for you.
Can you do other landscaping as well while you are there?
Yes. The designer can estimate other landscaping while they are there and provide you with a written quote on the day of your design.
Do you do weekends or only weekdays?
Our designers work 7 days a week, but weekends tend to book up fast. You can click here to make an appointment or check our availability.
How do I send you the pictures of my property to be designed?
When you book an appointment, we will send you an email with some questions and a request for photos of the area. You can send them back to that email address. If you are unable to email them, you may drop them off in-store.
How long will the appointment take?
Usually about an hour, but we book you a 2 hour slot to ensure you have the time you need to go over everything.
Do I need to make a decision immediately?
Yes. The designer will explain everything to you and have everything laid out, so you would need if you want to keep the plants or not. Please have all decision makers present at the time of the appointment.
What if I end up not wanting to purchase anything?
There is no obligation to buy. If you decide not to move forward, you will only be charged the $99 to cover the designers time.
Does the $99 get waived if I do decide to purchase?
No, the $99 fee is to cover the designers time.
Does the designer come out first to see the area? How do they know what to bring?
They can get a good idea from the pictures you send and with the questions we will ask you in our email. They always bring more than they need just in case. It’s like bringing the garden center to you! They can always bring more plants out if the design you agree to requires more than what they brought.
After everything is laid out, do I get a paper design?
No. We skip over the paper design and get right to the layout process. The $99 design service is design, delivery, and layout, all in one simple step.
Do you do commercial jobs and condos?
No we do not.
What if I need plants removed first?
Mention that in the notes when you book the appointment, and we will do a removal estimate first.
Plant FAQs
How often should I water my plants?
Watering depends on the plant type, but most prefer consistent moisture without sitting in soggy soil. Always check the top inch of soil before watering.
How do I know if I’m overwatering or underwatering?
Yellowing leaves and soggy soil usually mean overwatering, while dry, crispy leaves can indicate underwatering. When in doubt, check the soil moisture first.
What plants are easiest for beginners?
Hardy perennials, shrubs like hydrangeas or spirea, and low-maintenance annuals are great starting points. Our staff can help you choose based on your space, or you can click here for a complete selection.
How do I know if a plant needs full sun or shade?
Full sun means 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day. Partial sun/shade is 3–6 hours, and full shade is less than 3 hours. You can check out our collections of bright light, bright indirect light, low light, and low light (tolerant) to view plants depending on your needs!
Can I plant this in my yard if I’m not sure about sunlight?
Yes! Take note of how much sun the area gets throughout the day, and we can help match you with the right plant for that spot.
When is the best time to plant in Massachusetts?
Spring and fall are ideal for most planting. Summer planting is possible with proper watering, but cooler seasons are less stressful for plants.
Will this plant survive the winter here?
Look for the plant’s hardiness zone. In our area, Zone 5–6 plants are typically winter-hardy.
Do you carry pet-safe plants?
Yes, we do carry pet-friendly options. Ask our team, or click here to find safe choices for homes with pets.
Do you offer help choosing plants for my space?
Absolutely! Bring photos or measurements of your space, and our team can recommend the best plants for your conditions.
I think this tree I had planted is dead.
If it's before Memorial Day, the plant may still be exhibiting its dormant behavior. We can assess after Memorial Day as the plant may "wake up" by then and surprise us! If it still appears lifeless after that we can help.
