Blueberry Shrubs

Blueberry shrubs (Vaccinium) are highly desirable edible landscape plants known for their sweet, antioxidant-rich berries and attractive multi-season interest. In spring, they produce clusters of delicate white to pink bell-shaped flowers that attract pollinators, followed by juicy blueberries in summer and vibrant red-orange foliage in fall. Their compact, bushy form makes them ideal for edible gardens, hedgerows, and container growing.

These fruiting, pollinator-friendly, and beginner-friendly outdoor shrubs thrive in full sun for best berry production and require well-draining, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5). They are low maintenance once established, but perform best with consistent moisture and proper soil conditions. Blueberries are excellent for combining ornamental beauty with productive harvests.

Maintenance Tip:
Prune in late winter by removing dead or weak canes and thinning older stems to encourage new growth. Apply an acid-loving fertilizer in early spring, and mulch with pine bark or similar material to maintain soil acidity and moisture. Protect developing fruit from birds if needed for best harvest yields.

Bluecrop Blueberry

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but produces larger harvests and better fruit size when planted with another northern highbush blueberry variety such as Blue Ray, Jersey, or Duke.

Bluecrop is one of the most popular blueberry varieties, known for its reliable production, large firm berries, and excellent flavor. It ripens in mid-season and is valued for its adaptability, vigor, and consistent performance in home gardens.

Blue Jay Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but benefits from cross-pollination with other northern highbush varieties such as Bluecrop, Blue Ray, or Jersey.

Blue Jay is an early-season blueberry variety known for producing firm, light-blue berries with a mild, sweet flavor. It is a vigorous grower and is often appreciated for its reliable fruit production and easy harvesting.

Blue Ray Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but performs best when planted near other northern highbush blueberries such as Bluecrop, Jersey, or Blue Jay.

Blue Ray produces large, flavorful berries with a classic sweet-tart blueberry taste. This mid-season variety is known for heavy crops, attractive fall foliage, and strong garden performance.

Jelly Bean® Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but benefits from cross-pollination with another northern highbush blueberry variety such as Bluecrop, Blue Ray, or Jersey.

Jelly Bean® is a compact blueberry variety bred for smaller spaces and container growing. Despite its dwarf size, it produces full-sized, sweet berries and is an excellent choice for patios, edible landscapes, and small gardens.

Jersey Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but produces the best yields when paired with another northern highbush blueberry variety such as Bluecrop, Blue Ray, or Patriot.

Jersey is an old-fashioned favorite known for dependable crops of sweet, dark-blue berries that ripen late in the season. Its vigorous growth and reliable production make it a staple choice for backyard orchards.

Patriot Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but benefits greatly from cross-pollination with other northern highbush varieties such as Duke, Bluecrop, or Blue Ray.

Patriot is an early-season blueberry variety known for large, flavorful berries and excellent cold hardiness. Its compact growth habit and attractive fall color make it a great choice for northern gardens and home landscapes.

Duke Blueberry 

Pollination: Self-pollinating, but performs best with another early-season blueberry variety such as Patriot or Blue Jay for improved yields and fruit size.

Duke is one of the earliest ripening highbush blueberries, producing firm, light-blue berries with a mild sweet flavor. It is valued for its heavy production, upright growth habit, and reliable performance in cooler climates.
