Butterfly Weed

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a hardy native perennial celebrated for its vibrant clusters of orange blooms and exceptional pollinator value. Blooming from early to late summer, its bright flowers attract butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators, making it an essential addition to pollinator gardens and naturalized landscapes. As a native milkweed species, it also serves as an important host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars.

Its upright growth habit, narrow green foliage, and long-lasting blooms make Butterfly Weed a standout choice for sunny borders, meadow plantings, and drought-tolerant gardens. Once established, it is highly resilient and thrives in hot, dry conditions with minimal care.

Maintenance: Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, as Butterfly Weed prefers dry to moderately moist conditions and dislikes overly wet soil. Water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to help establish roots, then reduce watering frequency once established. Avoid transplanting mature plants whenever possible, as they develop deep taproots. Leave stems standing through fall and winter to support wildlife habitat, and cut back old growth in early spring before new growth begins.
