Dwarf Crested Iris (Iris cristata) is a low-growing native perennial known for its delicate, elegant blooms in shades of soft blue to lavender, often marked with white and yellow crests. Blooming in mid to late spring, its intricate flowers rise just above a carpet of attractive, spreading green foliage. This charming woodland plant is ideal for shaded gardens, rock gardens, and naturalized plantings where it can form dense, slowly spreading colonies over time.
Its early-season blooms provide important nectar for pollinators, while its compact habit makes it an excellent choice for edging shaded beds, pathways, and understory plantings beneath trees and shrubs.
Maintenance: Plant in partial shade to full shade with rich, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to help establish roots, then maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Avoid overly wet or heavy soils that may cause root issues. Lightly mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to support healthy growth the following season.
