#3 gallon pot.
Black Lace Elderberry (Sambucus nigra 'Eva') is a striking, fast-growing deciduous shrub prized for its deeply cut, dark purple-black foliage that resembles the delicate leaves of a Japanese maple. Large clusters of soft pink, lightly fragrant flowers appear in early summer, attracting pollinators and developing into dark purple-black berries when a compatible elderberry variety is planted nearby. Growing approximately 6–10 feet tall and wide, it creates a dramatic focal point in the landscape.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining soil, it is low maintenance, deer resistant, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for specimen plantings, mixed borders, privacy hedges, and wildlife gardens.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment, then during extended dry periods. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, removing damaged or older stems as needed. Avoid heavy spring pruning if flowers and berries are desired, as blooms develop on the previous year's growth. Apply mulch to retain moisture and fertilize in early spring if needed.
