‘Evergold’ Variegated Japanese Sedge is a compact ornamental grass-like perennial prized for its bright, arching foliage and excellent performance in shady landscapes. Narrow leaves feature bold creamy-yellow centers edged in deep green, creating a cascading mound that brings color and texture to areas where many ornamental grasses struggle. Growing approximately 12–18 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, ‘Evergold’ is an excellent choice for shade gardens, borders, woodland edges, containers, and mass plantings.
Although its flowers are relatively insignificant, ‘Evergold’ provides outstanding foliage interest throughout the growing season. Subtle flower spikes may appear around July, but the vibrant variegated leaves remain the main attraction. Its compact size and graceful habit pair beautifully with hostas, ferns, heuchera, and other shade-loving perennials.
Maintenance: Plant in partial shade to shade in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods, as Japanese sedge performs best when the soil does not completely dry out. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained locations. In early spring, remove damaged or tired-looking foliage before fresh new growth emerges. A light layer of mulch can help maintain consistent soil moisture and protect the roots through seasonal temperature changes.
