#15 gallon pot.
Viridis Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Viridis’) - Height: 6-10 ft, Width: 8-12 ft. Interest: Graceful weeping form with finely cut green foliage and brilliant golden-orange fall color. ‘Viridis’ is a beautiful laceleaf Japanese Maple known for its delicate, bright green leaves and elegant, cascading branches that create a soft, flowing appearance. Unlike red laceleaf varieties, its vibrant green foliage provides a fresh, airy look throughout spring and summer before transforming into stunning shades of golden yellow, orange, and red in fall. Its naturally rounded, weeping habit makes it an excellent focal point for garden beds, patios, water features, and smaller landscapes. Plant in partial shade with moist, well-draining soil, ideally protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds. Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead or crossing branches to maintain its graceful natural shape.
Watering Tips:
Water deeply after planting to fully saturate the root ball and surrounding soil.
During the first growing season, water 2–3 times per week or as needed to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
Once established, water weekly during dry spells. Japanese maples prefer evenly moist, well-drained soil.
Avoid overwatering and poorly drained conditions to prevent root rot.
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Fertilizing Tips:
Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) or a low-nitrogen formula for trees.
Follow label directions based on tree size or container volume.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can lead to overly vigorous, weak growth.
Stop fertilizing by early August to prevent soft new growth that may not harden off before winter.
Add compost or organic matter annually to improve soil health and provide gentle, ongoing nutrients.
Maintenance Tip:
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds, and keep soil consistently moist but well-drained. Apply mulch to regulate soil temperature and avoid heavy fertilizing, as they prefer a gentle feeding schedule.
