Butterflies Magnolia (Magnolia ‘Butterflies’) - Height: 15-20 ft, Width: 10-15 ft. Bloom Time: Mid to Late Spring. Butterflies Magnolia is a stunning ornamental tree known for its abundant, bright yellow flowers that resemble butterflies resting along its branches. The lightly fragrant, tulip-shaped blooms appear before the leaves emerge, creating a spectacular spring display. Its upright, pyramidal growth habit and rich green summer foliage make it an excellent specimen tree for lawns, garden beds, and entryway landscapes. This cold-hardy magnolia is a beautiful choice for adding unique spring color to New England gardens. Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, fertile, well-draining soil. Water regularly during establishment and mulch around the base to help retain moisture. Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches, preferably after flowering.
Maintenance Tip:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as magnolias can be slow to recover. Water during dry periods, especially when young, and apply mulch to retain moisture and protect shallow roots. Fertilize in early spring if needed.
