New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is a hardy native perennial prized for its vibrant late-season display of purple, pink, or violet daisy-like flowers with bright golden centers. Blooming from late summer through fall, it provides a burst of color when many other garden plants are beginning to fade. Its upright growth habit and abundant blooms make it a standout addition to perennial borders, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
A favorite of butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators, New England Aster is especially valuable as a late-season nectar source. Its colorful flowers pair beautifully with ornamental grasses and other fall-blooming perennials, bringing texture, movement, and wildlife activity to the garden.
Maintenance: Plant in full sun with well-drained soil for best flowering performance. Water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to establish roots, then provide supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods. Pinching stems back in early summer can encourage a fuller, bushier plant and reduce the need for staking. Cut back old growth in late fall or early spring, or leave seed heads standing through winter to provide seasonal interest and support wildlife.
