#2 gallon pot. Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ is a striking ornamental fountain grass known for its large, bottlebrush-like flower plumes that emerge deep burgundy-purple before maturing to soft tan. Its arching green foliage forms a graceful, fountain-like mound that adds movement, texture, and structure to garden beds, borders, and mixed perennial plantings. Blooming from late summer into fall, it provides strong seasonal interest and beautiful contrast in autumn landscapes.
This variety is especially valued for its bold flower heads, sturdy upright habit, and ability to bring soft motion to sunny garden spaces. It works well as a specimen plant or mass planting for a naturalized, flowing effect.
Maintenance: Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to establish roots. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant and prefers moderate watering only during extended dry periods. Cut back foliage to a few inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Avoid overly wet soil, especially in winter, to prevent crown issues.
