Raspberry Shortcake® is a compact, thornless raspberry specially suited for smaller gardens, patios, and container growing. This naturally dwarf variety forms a tidy, rounded plant rather than the long, sprawling canes of traditional raspberries, reaching approximately 2–3 feet tall and wide. Small white flowers develop into sweet, full-sized red raspberries in summer, perfect for fresh eating, desserts, jams, and other homemade treats.
This productive raspberry thrives in full sun and fertile, well-draining soil with consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development. Raspberry Shortcake® is self-pollinating, so a second raspberry variety is not required for fruit production. Its thornless stems, manageable size, and lack of need for a trellis make it an excellent choice for edible landscapes, raised beds, and large patio containers.
Maintenance: Water regularly during the first growing season and maintain consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development, especially when growing in a container. Mulch around in-ground plants to conserve moisture and reduce weeds while keeping mulch away from the crown. After fruiting, remove the canes that produced berries at ground level, leaving the fresh new canes to produce the following season’s crop. Fertilize lightly in early spring as new growth begins. Container-grown plants should be monitored more frequently for watering and given winter protection in colder climates to help protect the roots.
