Purple Gem Rhododendron (Rhododendron 'Purple Gem') is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its stunning clusters of vibrant purple-blue flowers that nearly cover the entire plant in mid-spring. Its small, dense, dark green leaves provide beautiful year-round color and fine texture, while its naturally rounded growth habit creates a neat, attractive appearance. Growing approximately 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, it offers a colorful spring display without requiring much space.

Thriving in partial shade and moist, acidic, well-draining soil, it is cold hardy, low maintenance once established, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for foundation plantings, rock gardens, woodland gardens, mixed borders, and smaller landscapes.

Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment and keep soil consistently moist, especially during prolonged dry periods. Prune lightly immediately after flowering if needed to maintain its compact shape, although little pruning is typically necessary. Apply mulch to retain moisture and protect shallow roots, and fertilize with an acid-loving fertilizer in early spring if needed.
