Showy Aster (Aster eur. spectabilis) is a native perennial celebrated for its masses of lavender-purple, daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centers that bloom from late summer into fall. Its colorful blooms provide valuable late-season nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators when many other garden plants have finished flowering. The sturdy stems and attractive blue-green foliage create a neat, upright habit that works beautifully in perennial borders, pollinator gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
This easy-to-grow native wildflower brings vibrant fall color and ecological value to the garden while blending naturally with ornamental grasses and other late-season perennials. Its long bloom period and pollinator appeal make it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly plantings.
Maintenance: Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to establish roots, then provide supplemental watering during extended dry periods. Once established, Showy Aster is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal care. Cut back stems in late fall or early spring if desired, or leave seed heads standing through winter to provide seasonal interest and wildlife habitat.
