Smokebush ‘Winecraft Black’ is a dramatic deciduous shrub prized for its deep, near-black foliage and airy, smoke-like flower plumes. Emerging rich burgundy in spring, the leaves darken to an intense purple-black throughout the growing season, creating exceptional contrast in the landscape. In early summer, soft pink plumes appear above the foliage, giving the plant its signature “smoky” appearance and adding a unique texture that lasts for weeks.
This compact variety offers the bold color of larger smokebushes in a more manageable size, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mixed borders, specimen gardens, and modern landscapes. In fall, the foliage takes on brilliant shades of red and orange, providing another season of outstanding color.
Maintenance: Plant in full sun for the darkest foliage color and best flowering performance. Grow in well-drained soil and water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to establish roots. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal care. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape if desired, and remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.
