Amsonia Orientalis syn. tabernaemontana. Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’, commonly known as Star Flower, is a long-lived perennial prized for its clusters of rich periwinkle-blue, star-shaped flowers that appear in late spring. Its compact, mounded habit and fine-textured foliage bring season-long interest to garden beds, borders, and pollinator plantings. The soft blue blooms create a striking display above dense green foliage, while the leaves often develop beautiful golden-yellow color in fall, extending its ornamental appeal well beyond the flowering season.
This easy-care perennial attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators while providing reliable performance in a variety of landscape settings. Its neat habit and multi-season interest make it an excellent choice for cottage gardens, native-inspired plantings, and mixed perennial borders.
Maintenance: Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first 1–2 weeks after planting to establish roots, then provide moderate moisture during extended dry periods. Once established, Amsonia is relatively drought tolerant and requires little maintenance. Cut back stems in late fall or early spring if desired, and enjoy the attractive golden foliage that often develops in autumn.
