#3 gallon pot.
Hummingbird Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird') is a compact, deciduous flowering shrub known for its abundant spikes of creamy white, highly fragrant flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Its sweet, nectar-rich blossoms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its glossy dark green foliage turns beautiful golden-yellow shades in fall. Growing approximately 2–4 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, it forms a dense, spreading mound that provides beautiful seasonal color and texture.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, acidic soil, it tolerates wet conditions and is low maintenance, fragrant, and highly pollinator-friendly. Ideal for foundation plantings, woodland gardens, mixed borders, mass plantings, and smaller landscapes.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment and keep soil consistently moist, especially during prolonged dry periods. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring if needed to maintain its naturally compact shape, as flowers develop on new growth. Remove older or damaged stems as necessary, apply mulch to retain moisture, and fertilize lightly in spring if needed.
