Opening Day Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum) is a stunning, deciduous flowering shrub known for its exceptionally large, baseball-sized clusters of snowball-like flowers that emerge with soft green tones before maturing to brilliant white in spring. Its abundant blooms create a spectacular display against deeply textured, dark green foliage, while its dense, naturally rounded growth habit provides attractive structure throughout the growing season. In fall, its leaves develop rich burgundy-red to deep purple tones, adding another season of vibrant color. Growing approximately 6–8 feet tall and wide, it creates an impressive focal point in the landscape.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining soil, it is cold hardy, low maintenance, deer resistant, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for specimen plantings, mixed borders, flowering hedges, and larger foundation plantings.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment, then during extended dry periods to maintain healthy growth. Prune lightly immediately after flowering if needed to maintain its naturally rounded shape, as flowers develop on the previous year's growth. Remove damaged or crossing branches as necessary, apply mulch to retain soil moisture, and fertilize lightly in early spring if needed.
