#3 gallon pot.
Spice Island Viburnum (Viburnum carlesii) is a compact, deciduous flowering shrub prized for its exceptionally fragrant, snowball-like clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom in spring. Unlike many traditional Korean Spice Viburnums, its blossoms appear against fully developed, dark green foliage, creating a beautiful contrast while filling the surrounding landscape with a sweet, spicy fragrance. Its naturally dense, rounded growth habit and stunning burgundy-red fall foliage provide beautiful multi-season interest. Growing approximately 4–5 feet tall and wide, it offers remarkable fragrance and color in a manageable size.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining soil, it is low maintenance, fragrant, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for foundation plantings, mixed borders, specimen plantings, and gardens near patios or walkways where its fragrance can be enjoyed.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during prolonged dry periods. Prune lightly immediately after flowering if needed to maintain its naturally rounded shape, as next year's flower buds develop on older growth. Apply mulch to retain moisture and protect roots, and fertilize lightly in early spring if needed.
