#3 gallon pot.
Very Fine Wine Weigela (Weigela florida 'Very Fine Wine') is a beautiful, compact deciduous shrub known for its exceptionally dark, burgundy-purple to nearly black foliage and abundant clusters of vibrant, rosy-pink, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear in late spring. Its richly colored leaves provide dramatic contrast throughout the growing season, while its naturally dense, rounded growth habit creates an attractive, uniform appearance. This improved selection is especially valued for its excellent cold hardiness and reduced winter tip dieback compared to some older varieties. Growing approximately 2–2.5 feet tall and wide, it offers striking color in a smaller, manageable form.
Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, it is cold hardy, deer resistant, low maintenance, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for foundation plantings, mixed borders, low hedges, mass plantings, and smaller sunny landscapes.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment, then during extended dry periods. Prune lightly immediately after flowering if needed to maintain its naturally rounded shape and preserve next year's flower buds. Remove dead or winter-damaged stems as necessary, apply mulch to retain soil moisture, and fertilize lightly in early spring if needed.
