#3 gallon pot.
Jim Dandy Winterberry (Ilex verticillata 'Jim Dandy') is a compact, deciduous shrub valued for its dense, rounded growth habit and its important role as a male pollinator for early-blooming female winterberry varieties. Its attractive green foliage provides a lush appearance throughout spring and summer before developing yellowish fall tones and dropping for winter. Small, inconspicuous white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, providing pollen for nearby female plants. Growing approximately 3–6 feet tall and wide, it adds natural structure and texture to the landscape.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, acidic, well-draining soil, it is low maintenance, cold hardy, and pollinator-friendly. Ideal for mixed borders, naturalized areas, rain gardens, and wildlife gardens. Although it does not produce berries itself, it is essential for helping compatible female winterberries develop their colorful winter fruit.
Maintenance Tip: Water regularly during establishment and keep soil consistently moist, especially during prolonged dry periods. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring if needed to maintain shape, avoiding excessive pruning that could reduce spring flowers and available pollen. Apply mulch to retain moisture and protect roots, and fertilize lightly in spring if needed.
This is a male variety that does not produce berries, but can pollinate others if planted near compatible early-blooming female winterberries, such as Red Sprite or Berry Heavy.
